Sitting Alone
a hundred or more kids sit
laughing, talking, eating
together in groups of their friends,
while she sits alone
scared to open up,
afraid to get hurt again.
They go over to where she’s sitting
she tells her self,
look down,
no eye contact,
sink lower,
but it won’t work.
they keep poking and prodding
trying to get her to talk
maybe they’ll leave
but they won’t
and she knows it.
she might get hurt once more
if she talks.
she’d rather
sit alone.
