Country Train at Midnight
Through the window
the frozen lake is swimming
in the moonlight
and the hollow whistle
of the train
echoes
across the sky.
The blackened gate slides
past the windows,
locking
the moon in its cell—
then swallowed
by the tunnel, people
appear like ghosts;
shadows
against the incoming
train.
