Struggling Plant
Lonely forgotten
Decades old
The discarded basket
Lays entangled
In the jungle
Woven fabric
Forms a rough contour
Surrounding the wooden frame
Soiled by grime
And harsh elements
Winter arrives
The container exposed
Once more
To the weathering climate
Awaiting spring
Warm weather replaces the cold
The ground awakens
New foliage urges forth
The deep green sea
Of the earth
A grotto
Made by bowed branches
Warped vines
And crumpled leaves
Around the basket
Soon life flourishes again
The durable trunks
Of trees and bushes
Shoots of green surface
Only one emerges the winner
Struggling through
The dirty linen exterior
The basket invaded
By the stranger
Clothed in green
It wriggles
And weaves
Through the basket
As agile as a cat
To survive
From the thawed ground
It breaks the earthen prison
Searching for
Its final intent
The sunlight
The plant reaches out
Tendrils grasping
The rough interior
Of the woven textile
Cavern
A goal achieved
It breaks through
Light filtering in
From the jungle canopy
The green plant sprouts
Attained by sunlight
Through the linen strips
Woven through
A discarded basket
The determined plant
Succeeds
The journey
Lengthy and challenging
The aspiration
Priceless
The gift of life

On a school field trip to the MFA in Boston, I saw a mixed media picture that inspired me to write this poem.
