golden paved roads

they said the paved gold roads
were the best it could ever be,
if you were at the top
you were loved
I believed in what I wanted
but that was never enough
until I actually started feeling the burn
my dreams were clutched
so hard in between my fingers
they could never slip away
when I walked the roads paved
in all gold
all eyes stared me down
my head was so high in the clouds
I lacked the oxygen
my lungs needed to keep me alive
