Washing Dishes
I find pride in knowing that I’m the only one who can wash dishes,
That my siblings can’t get the gunk from them,
And I also like that they depend on that part of me.
Only I was exposed to the strict jawline of my father
Who taught me how firm you must be with a rag,
But also how quick the white bubbles dissolve in dirt.
Now that he is gone you cling to my legs
Making me fall on my back with the rag landing on my face
I guess I’m okay with my nail polish chipping in the warm water.
I guess I’m okay with the prunie hands I’ve developed.
As long as the job gets done
And a smile is stained on their faces
