The Mirror Image
Jake saunters the halls
He’s walking on air
There’s pride in his stroll
And he’s too cool to care
Drew shuffles his feet
And hopes they won’t stare
Hands in his pockets
Eyes filled with despair
Jake runs down the field
The cheering crowd roars
They watch in awe
As he easily scores
Drew waits on tables
And sweeps the floors
Receiving no thanks
For his hours of chores
As homecoming king
Jake hops on the stage
So much confidence
At such a young age
Drew politely accepts
Below minimum wage
Such low self-esteem
At such a young age
Jake escorts his date
To their magical night
Everything so simple
In plain black and white
Drew’s tie is too short
His belt is too tight
He heads out alone
To this “magical” night
These are the moments
Jake will never forget
For he hasn’t discovered
His fatal flaw yet
Drew awkwardly rises
And dances alone
As if he’s a shadow
And lives life unknown
Jake dreams up a prank
To make him “class clown”
He punches the nerd
And tackles him down
The wind leaves his lungs
As he utters a sound
Drew lies there frozen
On the cold tiled ground
Jake points and he laughs
As his friends do the same
In their senseless minds
This is all just a game
The next day he shakes
As his hands start to sweat
Drew pulls out a rope
His gaze is dead set
Jake walks to the grave
And puts down a rose
Overwhelmed with regret
Of the path that he chose
Drew rests in the hearts
Of all who remain
They drown in remorse
They’re smothered by shame
Jake shuffles his feet
And hopes they won’t stare
Hands in his pockets
Eyes filled with despair.
