The Heart of Shyness
Do the intentions of the heart of shyness lie in silence?
Is the heart timid and weak, keeping only to oneself,
building a levee from the waves of judgment?
Why does the heart so struggle
To spark the words of fire,
While others need not even fan the flame?
The heart of shyness, you see, lies not meekly in silence,
but bravely in peace.
The heart has uncovered the treasure that is to be still,
To harbor the callings that speak from within.
The perception of weakness is birthed out of society’s
Notion that only the loud are heard,
But sometimes only ignorance speaks.
The true gem of life is finding meaning in silence,
And the heart has discovered that silence speaks where words fail.
The struggle to articulate comes not from a lack of ability,
But rather from a sense of security.
For amidst the silence, the heart has discovered that
Words are sacred
And hold the key to the innermost depths of the soul.
To be shy is not to live in fear;
It is to love the beauty of life so fiercely
That every word and moment
Is cherished too deeply to give away without care.

The struggles I have encountered as an introverted, teenage girl living in an extroverted, male dominated world inspired me to write "The Heart of Shyness." Too often, shy teenagers are forgotten or misunderstood, and I want to use my platform- writing- to speak where people will listen. Being shy is not a sign of weakness; being shy is finding strength in holding words close to the heart.
