Dreams
I arrived early, I knew you would be asleep.
You never do wake up before the sun like I do.
I used the key you gave me just days before to quietly unlock the door and let myself in,
the violet sunrise beginning to shine through the window.
With hot tea and an old book, I sit on the window seat in your room and wait for you to wake,
the sun will be high in the sky when you do.
The sunrise is now diluted by the blue sky of the afternoon.
You still have not waken.
Your eyelids flutter every now and again, dreams are stirring in your mind,
I wonder what visions are dancing about in there.
Are you dreaming of the house and children we hope for? The tiny little dog we adore?
At last, you stretch your arms out.
You look at me for the first time today, you smile.
I climb into bed with you.
With my head on your chest, listening to your heartbeat, I ask about your dreams.
