Soaring
Wandering across the smooth, gray, rocks,
I stumbled upon an animal,
an eagle by the rocky shore,
injured, or sick, maybe both.
It’s body broken, but it’s spirit still full of life.
What was it doing here on the ground?
The eagle’s frantic energy spilled onto my presence.
Floundering on the ground.
The sound of it’s wings flapping unsuccessfully,
filled the air.
Helpless and vulnerable,
I felt compelled to save the winged body.
It seemed almost as if we crossed paths for a reason,
fate brought me to that rocky shore.
Blue sky overhead, the sun beamed down
on the two of us, like a spot light.
Without a thought,
my heart carried the eagle back to my campsite.
Thankful to have brought my dog’s kennel,
that’s where the eagle was housed.
The scraping of talons on the plastic walls.
Stars filling the sky for every minute we waited
for help to arrive.
Crunching footsteps drew closer and closer.
Help swooped in like an eagle,
soaring, patrolling, representing.
A heavy weight was lifted off my shoulders
as they carried the eagle to a safe rescue.
Knowing the eagle was safe and healing,
the eerie stillness turned to peacefulness.
The moon glistened over the water’s edge,
behind the fire’s orange, smokey glow.
