Demon #4-9
#4-9: self-hatred
he paces around me
smiling sinisterly
his bleached teeth glittering
From the light of the fire
his stance, flittering
Like the stories of a liar
Even the shadows run
as the Demon holds his trident
calling upon a swirling mass
Their threat, silent
but heavy in the air.
The cloud manifests itself
Within my mind and heart
Corrupting every sliver of love
Or having them depart.
The change is sudden and
the aim precise and sharp
Like the spear thrown to the fish
Awake from the dark of the
Deep blue sea,
The strike breaking it
From its reverie.

The idea for this piece came one day when I wondered how everybody had their own demons and each one was a culprit of corruption. Their criminal nature had me peg them with a number, self-hatred being 4-9. In Chinese, the word four, ?, or sì, sounds like the Chinese word for death, ??, or s?wáng which can be a result of self-hate because of suicide. Similarly, in Japanese, the word for nine, ?, or ky?, sounds similar to the Japanese word for torture or suffering which is what happens when a person attempts to be perfect, ultimately hurting themselves in the process.
