Once upon a time
Before the world was born
I remember you
Eyes just like a storm

Hair as dark as nightmares
Heart of blackened steel
Nothing could replace you
Except the Raven's fear

That spring was warm and sunny
When they took you away
Wrenched you from my grasp
As if you'd fly that day

They clapped you in irons
That burned your skin so bad
The blood was a deep crimson
Their smiles seemed quite glad

All the while you stood there
You didn't hardly twitch
When the whip and cat of nine tails
Fell across your skin

And through the pain you waited
Your eyes were locked on mine
And tears streamed down my face
at the horror of their crime

When they'd finally finished
When their deed was done
They left you bruised and broken
Your clothes had all been torn

And as I wept beside you
From your swollen back
Grew wings with coal black feathers
A Raven might have had

They began to lift you
up into the air
They cloaked you like a blanket
In the now frigid mourning air

The only part of you
That the men had left to spare
Took you high into the sky
And left me standing there

I gathered up my courage and
Dusted off my skirts
I'd known it for a while
So why did it still hurt

I took away your clothes
And patched them up at home
I washed away the blood
And laid them on a stone

I slept alone at night
The bed it felt too large
When I got up sometimes
I didn't quite realize

And when I set the table
I still put out two plates
I waited for your homecoming
Until it was too late

And when I had grown old
And my days were nearly done
You knocked upon my window
Wings glowed beneath the sun

Your face it had not changed
The fey within your blood
And when you took my hands
I could still feel your love

You whispered to me sweetly
As you carried me away
Into Fairyland where
You'd been since that strange day

And when we finally landed
I almost died of shock
I was young again
In the prettiest of frocks

You kissed my hand and
spun me into eternity
The only way to freedom
Was to be happy

And now we're still together
The raven and the maid
Our very own fairy tale
Brushed off and put away

The author's comments:

I wrote this piece after finishing a really great book about love that couldn't be, and reality that was like steping into a dream. It made me feel lonely and safe all at the same time. Just like the maiden in this piece. I loved writing it and I hope you enjoy!
