She Had Said
Life is fun, she had said,
A smile kissing her lips with innocence
Blind to the reality of greater war
Giggles and energy frees from her
Life is scary, she had said,
Millions of new faces crowded around
Expectations had to be met, or else
But Daddy was always there for her
Life is stupid, she had said,
Rumors spread like flu, just as crippling
Nights were spent up, days were spent drearily
Maybe, just maybe, rest would lay ahead
Life is unjust, she had said,
Tears fell, darkness dressed her for the dreadful night
Sickly faces crowded, peering at the still man ahead
With evil on the spree, blood boiled within her
Life is joyous, she had said,
Hats thrown; Freedom peeked around the corner
Celebration commenced; He sat on the mantel
This time was for joy, not sorrow
Life is lonely, she had said,
Floating in the night, lit here and there
Warmth of family felt distant
Numbers and letters danced absentmindedly
Life is exhausting, she had said,
Nights dragged out longer and longer
Everything dulled gray
Restless nights are parasites
Life is whimsical, she had said,
The courageous heart sped ahead
Chivalry was found at last
Those charming eyes never left
Life is beautiful, she had said,
Treasure was held tightly yet carefully
She would take the dove under wing
A laurel blossomed from the earthy rock
Life is fast, she had said,
Time took flight, leaving her thrashing behind
Little dove hesitantly left the nest
Shadows started to reveal themselves
Life is torture, she had said,
The storm blew over, winds ferocious
Whirlwinds blew everyone away
Earth crumbled at her feet
This is it, she had said,
Life slipped from her hands
This is it, she had said,
Death had won
