The Canary Who Sings On High
See how the canary sings,
High above the red oak trees,
How it soars and flaps its wings,
Soaring on the summer breeze.
And down below near the riverbed,
Rests a young white-tailed deer,
Who tilts his face toward the setting sun,
With no reason for worry or fear.
Nearby the river gently flows,
Twisting until it’s out of sight,
Where it goes to, no one knows;
To find out would be a true delight.
And here we are, upon this earth,
Underneath the blue of a cloudless sky,
Surrounded by color and life and birth,
Just like the canary who sings on high.
We are one people who share the land,
Who wade in the water with bare feet,
Touching the soil and rocks and sand,
Dancing among the sweet smelling mesquite.
Together we are bound in harmony,
Wholly as the sun and the moon in the sky,
Changing as the seasons swiftly come and go,
Just like the canary who sings on high.
