Where I Am From
I am from kindness.
From treating people the way I would want to be treated--
even when people treat me as inferior.
But there is always a breaking point.
I am from school.
From working on school projects late at night to get the grade I’m looking for
despite teachers that stand in my way.
The breaking point will come.
I am from work.
From customers complaining.
One day a customer will yell at me the the wrong way and...BAM!
Just like that, I will be at my breaking point.
I am from a broken family.
From a family where people hate instead of love, cry instead of laugh,
and fight instead of understand.
One day I just might not go home, and that will be my breaking point.
I am from friends.
From “She is fat,” to “She looks so ugly!”
Nobody deserves to be talked about like that.
Soon I will break.
I am from softball.
From being told “you will never make the varsity team,”
to coaches not seeing my defensive strengths.
I feel the breaking point coming.
I am from waiting for my breaking point.
When that day comes,
when I become overwhelmed to the point of breaking,
I hope I find strength through the kindness of which I am from.
