Far From Shore
Hopping aboard with snorkel gear,
Anxious to see the marine life of Mexico
Bouncing across the choppy waves
A skier’s slalom course we weave
Arriving at the reef and plunging in.
Seven squid flowing on the bottom
Like an elegant white dress blowing in the wind
Suddenly waves grow more massive
Crashing on us, annoying slaps to our heads
Seeing coral protrude
Jagged shards of glass
We are pushed closer and closer
Kicking hard to move away
Brother resolves that sharks are near
Mother attempts to guide and calm us
Focused on the safe sandy shore
Like praying for a roller coaster ride to end
Seeing the tempting boat
An oasis in the desert
Abandoning the snorkeling adventure
Making a beeline to safety
Grasping on to the offered life ring
Hoisting ourselves to security
A prized catch we tumble into the boat
Safe at last beneath the calm blue sky
Sipping cokes and finding some laughs
At our unexpected ending to the day far from shore
