Paralyzed
He dragged his feet to the car, climbing in,
on his way home
after a long night with the boys
doing what they loved most -
building derby cars
The august morning air was crisp
but wasn’t enough to keep his attention
His eyelids heavy - rolling down the window
to fight back the fatigue.
Before long his mind had given in and his chin
hit his chest. The car veering off the pavement
His mind wandered in a dream state
unaware of the sever mistake he had made -
to fasten his seatbelt
Unconscious the whole helicopter ride
Waking up in the hospital on a traction bed,
finding out he was lucky to be alive
Still being paralyzed from the waist down
Being paralyzed was not going
to take a pause on his live
His spirit was no different -
deciding not to change his life
Finishing off high school just like normal teen
would do. Then went off to college into the real word
discovering what to do.
