We were just kids
Playing with an unfortunate set of matches
And we lit it up
On the property where rivers ran through
Where hills intersected with a beautiful view
Where you could see flowers for miles
Known as the valley of juveniles.

I guess we got into trouble old friend
In the deforested garden where our time ended
And we—
Yes we—
Were forced to let each other go
And I kept thinking:
Maybe I ran through the house with my shoes on?
Maybe you crossed a line too far and too far gone?
I'm sorry if I did something wrong…
Because that was the last I saw of you...
Who ever thought this is what blazing the sky
Would come to?

The author's comments:

Parents often reprimand their children for the errors they make, teaching them lessons and making sure they do not make the same mistakes in the future. However, it is very common that when facing consequences for having done wrong, many kids do not understand why they are being chastise, or think they are being spoken to in such a manner for something completely different than the true issue in the eyes of the parent. The goal of this poem is to accompany this idea, and explors the thought process of a child that has done wrong, struggling to understand how and why.
