The Summer Before I Was Thirteen
a hospital bed
in a room
out of place,
the room I used to sleep in.
fifty-three years of
trinkets and baubles
lined on shelves, with
musty books and
staling memories.
ten,
twenty
bodies squished
waiting,
waiting,
expecting.
sons, daughters,
mothers, fathers,
wives,
husbands,
siblings,
cousins,
friends—
"He’s passed."
silence.
controlled hysteria.
"He’s gone?"
he’s gone.
