Grandmother's Fading Away
That bright-eyed, curly redhead;
That hot-headed girl.
Playing jacks on the stoop
While humming a tune
O, how she has faded away
That dull-eyed white haired lass;
That mild old woman.
Sitting in her chair
While mumbling away.
Her memory filled brain,
It's emptying quite fast.
They sit and they wait for her to pass.
But for now, I know, I must
Prepare for the sorrow.
I must stay strong for my Aunt K.
Whose mother is, unfortunately, fading away.
The rest, they hunger for her possessions.
They desire to hear who inherits the house.
Still, though my Aunt and I pray
That my Grandmother will find peace one day.

This poem is, unfortunately, based around my grandmother who is in her last stages of Dementia/Alzheimer's disease. It also shows my family's early remorse for what is to come, but that I'm preparing to stay strong for my Aunt (the only relative I still speak to in that family) and for myself. The prayer is symbolic of our hope that she will no longer suffer.
