Little Silver Chain
You wear this little silver chain around your neck
You don’t remember where it came from
You don’t remember when you put it on
You don’t remember who gave it to you
This little silver chain is just there
Day after day the sun shines through your window
Your eyes flutter open and the first thing you feel
Is the little silver chain around your neck
Hanging around your neck, it sits like a weight
Making it difficult to lift your head up off the pillow
The day drags by like it drags your head down
Your head is foggy and the sky seems gray even though it's clear
People ask you why you don’t just take the little silver chain off
If only it was that simple
If only they could feel the weight of the little silver chain around their neck
It’s the end of the day and you wipe off your make up and take down your hair
Pulling your pajamas on you watch the little silver chain around your neck
Like it’s the only thing you’re wearing
You fall into bed and out of the corner of your eye you catch a glimmer of the little silver chain
Reflecting the moonlight that streams through your bedroom window
The next morning comes and although the sun rises every morning
You can’t remember the last time you felt its rays warm your face
Your ears work fine but somehow you miss the sound of the birds chirping
Your senses are overridden by the little silver chain
It’s all you can think about, all you can see, hear, feel
Then one day the little silver chain hanging around your neck
Pulls you down at only an ounce
You crumple to the ground and look up for a glimpse of sunlight
But all you can see is darkness
In a world full of light
