The Lie

I avert my eyes,
Pants aflame,
My eyes tracking
My words as they form
And tiptoe down
The growing length
Of my nose toward you,
The ninth commandment
A broken music disc on repeat
In my mind;
My tongue splits
Into two forked prongs as
I pray you don’t notice
My burning cheeks
Or pants,
And whisper,
“Yes, I’m okay.”
