Realities of the Prison System
Eyes weighed down by the fatigue of kindness
may have been confined to solitary
but they never grow tired of carving
the days into the wall
one by one
because they are counting forward,
all the way to infinity---
They see that what lies ahead
holds greater things, and
the weary cannot afford to rest.
Someday the world will improve
and the blame for that
will rest on the shoulders
of the hard-working,
because why fix what was never broken?
But let me tell you something:
the day the world reaches its peak of improvement
is the day the kind
have been climbing treacherous mountains
too long for.
It is the both the beginning and the end of time.
For now, let you and I be the ones who carve up the wall---
but let us never be desperate for escape.
