The Boy Next Door
We grew up together
I watched you experience life for the first time
You were my best friend for five years
We talked
About life
Love
The good and the bad
When I needed you
All I had to do was look out the window
You were the one I always went to
Then suddenly the fun stopped
You moved to a bigger school
I stayed
You made the world yours
A world without me
I was in middle school
You were in high school
We just couldn’t connect anymore
All our adventures
The long car rides together
The summer nights we spent talking about the future
The memories we made together seemed to slip away
I thought I lost you
Then one day
You showed up at my door
It was like we were kids again
We talked till the stars came out
That night we were best friends once more
We had both grown
A year had passed
It was summer now
I was going to go to your school now
Then you told me
You were moving
It was going to be just like old times
Then you were leaving me again
My only friend
There was nothing either of us could do
So we spent our last few weeks together
We laughed and sang
But in the end we knew our friendship would never be the same
I hugged you goodbye
You told me to never stop dreaming
Then you left
I only see you once a year now
But when we’re together
I can’t help remembering when we were young
When everything was simple
When all I had to do was look out my window
You were my best friend for five years
I watched you grow up
I watched you leave
I have new friends now
But I still look forward to seeing you one more time
