"Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice" - William Jennings Bryan

On our first date, we went to the bank

To get paper love, paper love

You said love from the heart was fake

You want paper love, paper love

Way too much, is not enough

Oh, your name is America

Yeah, your name is America

Don’t play with my head, I’m done letting you in!!

I thought we were friends, but then you ruined it!!

When you sucked me into the divide!!

When you made me believe in a lie!!

No more illusions, no more disguise!!

United we stand, I won’t fall this time!!

And every day, we went to the bank

To get paper love, paper love

But when I said this was a mistake

You told me we’re done, yeah we’re done

I cared too much, I cared too much

Oh, your name is America

Yeah, your name is America

Don’t play with my head, I’m done letting you in!!

I thought we were friends, but then you ruined it!!

When you sucked me into the divide!!

When you made me believe in a lie!!

No more illusions, no more disguise!!

United we stand, I won’t fall this time!!

I hope you didn’t hope for a miracle!!

I hope you didn’t hope for a miracle!!

I played right into your hands!!

Right when we started this dance!!…

True beauty is on the outside…

True talent is in the bloodline…

Success isn’t having a good time…

Keep making money and you’ll be fine…

True beauty is on the outside!

True talent is in the bloodline!

Success isn’t having a good time!

What a lie!!

On your first date, heard he struck your face

But with paper love, paper love

And that smile you fake, it’s like nothing changed

You let him touch, you way too much

But way too much is not enough!!

Don’t play with my head, I’m done letting you in…

I thought we were friends, but then you ruined it…

Don’t play with my head, I’m done letting you in!!

I thought we were friends, but then you ruined it!!

When you sucked me into the divide!!

When you made me believe in a lie!!

No more illusions, no more disguise!!

United we stand, I won’t fall this time!!

The author's comments:

This piece is a commentary about how money is valued so much in the materialistic culture of America. The verses present a dystopian society where "paper love" (money) is more valuable than love from the heart (in fact love from the heart is not considered to be genuine). The first verse serves to introduce the topic and the metaphor/imagery, but the second and third verses get progressively darker to highlight how a materialistic culture leads to obsession, addiction and abuse of the system by the rich and powerful. The prechorus connects those ideas to America, and the chorus brings readers back to reality and encourages them not to fall for or perpetuate divissive rhetoric that has become increasingly popular. The bridge is deliberately provacative to expose and refute the true beliefs of those who might support materialism and turn a blind eye to systemic inequalities in America.
