Death of Opera's Muse
Should I lie that opera died nobly
Pleading to become testy and human,
Spurned from the breast of creativity
For refraining from absolute demand?
Her last curtain call excused in silence
No shredded playbills littering her stage
As divinity bows to ignorance
Submitting to her dagger’s lesser gauge
But Mozart sent forth his last heroine
A final attempt to rescue the muse
The mortal goddess’s sacrifice in
Vain, her stitched vocal chords lose
Instead I claim opera’s justice reserved
Denied, the requiem great art deserved
