Old Friend
Eventually must all love not end?
Even love nurtured from an age so small
Even more sad when the love of a friend
When soon we get old and forget to call
The letters cease to arrive in the mail
On your birthday every year I still sing
Something so beautiful should not have failed
I can almost hear your phone start to ring
When you see it’s me I hear your machine
“Hi it’s me; leave a message at the beep.”
Putting my phone down I turn sickly green
You were a best friend I wanted to keep
It’s been awhile since you answered your phone
And in my heart I know I’m left alone.
