In this book Outbreak, the author, Mark P. Friedlander Jr. writes about the epidemics and pandemics that have plagued people throughout history and modern diseases. The meaning of epidemics means a widespread outbreak of an infectious disease; many people are infected at the same time. The book consists of a history of epidemics, their causes, the people who worked to control the microbes, and cures, if available. The revisions include a section on anthrax in the discussion of "Great Plagues of History," some updated information on AIDS, and a new chapter on bioterrorism. The author points out that “Although this is a relatively new term, the practice goes back to ancient cultures.” Specific examples are given, from ancient Greece to the present. This is a readable, intriguing overview of the destructive power of epidemics and the critical work of public health professionals.
Did you know that epidemic diseases have killed more people then all of the world-wars put together? That is just one surprising fact of the horrifying epidemics. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves science. It is a great lesson on epidemics and has many interesting facts. It is also very interesting to read because it tells us about ancient science. Not only do they talk about historical epidemics but modern ones, which are quite scary to learn about how many people, are dying from them. The author’s purpose of this book is to inform people about the epidemics of history and modern times. I hope this book will be a great enjoyment to read like it was for me.
