Doug Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow will have you literally at the edge of your seat, pondering what will happen. The story engulfs you into feelings of heartbreak, sorrow, and fear as you anticipate heart-wrenching deaths. Conceptually, it is simple, yet you can feel yourself in the movie, experiencing the pain firsthand in every individual scene.

Right from the beginning, Cage (played by Tom Cruise) is a U.S. Army Major, yet is forced by General Birgham of Great Britain to fight in the frontlines against the “Mimics,” an alien species invading Europe. Cage desperately tries to escape, but is knocked and sent to a military base in the U.S., where he fights the next day on a beach. To his team’s peril, the aliens crush them, leaving everyone dead. Yet immediately, we see Cage waking up, back in the U.S. military base, with everyone around him mimicking what they had said before. He desperately tries to warn everyone of the ambush on the beach, yet is ignored. When their team is wiped out, Cage wakes up once again back in the military base. He dies numerous times but eventually meets Vrataski (played by Emily Blunt), a woman who also had once relived days. They work together to try to stop Mimics from destroying their planet, yet this involves Cage dying countless times, feeling the pain of death and watching those he loves die over and over. Each death he experiences he feels as though he cannot progress closer to defeating the mimics. Later, Cage learns that there is a way that he can lose his ability to relive the days and must fight to defeat the aliens without losing his life in the process.

In Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise’s acting is heart wrenching. The most memorable piece of the acting that made me fall into the movie was in the scene where Vratski describes how she once had someone she died again and again in order to save, not knowing that Cage had actually done what she did, oblivious of his love for her. Cruise’s emotions and pain throughout the movie, watching Vratski die over and over whilst simultaneously falling in love with her is a rollercoaster of emotions and incredibly touching.

In this movie, the plot was one of the most unique concepts I have stumbled across in the plethora of movies that I have watched. Though there are some movies with a similar concept, the execution of the plot, showing each day stretching towards the next and Cage’s exhaustion from living years in the form of one day, exemplifies the stellar plot. Typically, movies follow a generic concept of someone getting kidnapped, getting hurt, internal or external conflict, but very few movies twist your brain and make you wonder, if you were in the movie what would you do? Edge of Tomorrow’s storyline is one that is exquisite and hard to find, differentiating itself from other movies on the market.

Edge of Tomorrow had me in tears. I was so touched by how beautiful and painful the emotions in the movie were. I would recommend this to everyone. This movie is by far one of my favorites and I will definitely rewatch it multiple times in the future! If you like sci-fi, or if you enjoy something that will rock your emotions and touch you in unbelievable ways, I urge you to watch Edge of Tomorrow.
