“When you're alone and life is making you lonely, You can always go Downtown.”

Sung, (Originally) by Petunia Clark, the song at first perceived and received as a lovely hit song released after 1964 in the UK, the song some years after released, then gets a few covers by Frank Sinatra and a joke referenced on Seinfeld (sea 7 ep 22), and all the more recently covered by an actress making her way through hollywood- Anya Taylor Joy who recently starred in the latest hit from Edger Wright’s Last Night In Soho.

Daring and interesting, Wright puts out a version of the actress’s investment on putting up two recordings. Joyfully enthusiastic whereas other recordings of the song’s longer…. Daring and frightening, leading the listener to get goosebumps. Or to feel like something’s lingering and feeling of uneasiness and thus, an apprehensive twist is born on the once lovely upbeat song Downtown.

First seeing the trailer for the film as a preview when watching another movie, and knowing the lead actress from other stuff, I immediately anticipated the 2021 horror-time-traveling-romance featuring the faces of upcoming charming supporting actor/ress, Thomasin Mackenize, Mat Smith, Terrance Stamp, and through a sense of wonder and camera angles and writing that delivers on leaving the audience wanting to know more about the picture. Thus, I grew interested as the trailer created a horror-like atmosphere just by the opening shot in the trailer and hearing Taylor Joy’s voice and no music but only her singing and footage shown, a sense of mystery seeping into the viewer after watching!

Excited after seeing the trailer on the big screen and knowing the actress, I rewatched the trailer to fully grasp everything and was able to replay and rewind. I only grew more interested in ‘Last Night In Soho!’ Which is Wright’s way to feel after watching the trailer.

Come Friday Night, October 29, 2021, full on intention of seeing it, and the rain was just falling. I really settled into the atmosphere. I eagerly awaited to buy a ticket and sit down for 1 hr and 57 mins.

Grinning and full of joy, and popcorn to be eaten- the movie begins and immediately pulls us in with it. As we meet the protagonist and main character Elois Turner played by Thomasin Mackenize who seems to be innocently making her ways around the world and dreaming of fashion. Getting a letter back from the college she attends and learns she’s going to be in London Soho for a bit.  Packing up and ready to go, wondering to be dreaming. We immediately feel for her as her mother died young.

Interestingly enough, we also learn that Turner loves the 60’s era of music by the ‘Kink’s’  and more!

Atmosphere projected into the audience's brains through the picture, we continue watching the thriller as the first act contains introductions and laying on the grounding of the world we see. The world we also hear as the songs picked do fit well into the scene, only pulling us into the time travel plot.

Edging it’s way towards the end, the time travel elements at first seem as if a wondrous dream for Turner and that seems to be an enjoyment and a simple dream for Turner. All that turns around as we Jack (Mat Smith) , a man of getting what he desires and then we’d be meeting Sandi Collins. Sandi only dreams of singing for everyone! Jack, sensing this and we’re led to believe Sandi’s getting her dream! Or so it seemed, as the time travel doesn’t need to be time travel but travel all around the world through Turner as she struggles to relive the fantasy-past and the horrific present time! Turning around, Sandi goes from a singer to a deader as murdered! But was she murdered? Turner thinks so!

By the end, all is revealed and the satisfying safety of Turner seeps the way through the hearts of the viewers as she succeeds and wins the fashion designing course. Meanwhile getting some love!
