‘Shelter,’ composed by artists Porter Robinson and Madeon, collaborated with Japanese animation studio  A-1 Pictures to release an animated short film.  

The film follows 17-year old Rin who lives alone in a futuristic simulation.  She uses a special tablet that allows her to manipulate the environment around her.  For the next few minutes, she builds skyscraper-like structures and fantasy ecosystems, like an all-powerful creator.  All of a sudden, she becomes an invisible observer, witnessing her life as a child living in Tokyo under her father’s care.  She learns of a planetary object on a collision course with Earth, and how her father built a spacecraft capable of supporting her life.  

Every moment of this film is beautifully illustrated through flawless animation and storytelling.  Viewers quickly understand Rin’s world and her perspective of life in this world through clever monologuing.  The author also creates a melancholic tone when we learn how Rin is alone in a simulation, but harnesses the power of her environment to remain grateful and uplifted.  The lyrics of ‘Shelter’ match the tone of the short film; they convey gratefulness and respect for those who protect us.  The film and music were beautifully written and composed.  

Porter Robinson and Madeon were successful in showing the effectiveness that love and security have on people. They taught a powerful lesson; expressing your love to others will shelter them from harm.
