Music Review
On November 25,2016 Abel Tesfaye also known as ‘The Weeknd’ released his thirteenth album “Starboy” which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and Billboard’s Canadian Albums Chart. In 2019 the album was certified triple platinum by the RIAA ( Recording Industry Association of America) and the album also won the Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album.
The Weeknd rose to fame in 2011 when he released his mixtape “House of Balloons”. He immediately began growing a fanbase, dubbed XO even though he was being in mystery by not showing his appearance. He let his music speak for him and soon was creating a buzz around the world. People were listening to him all over the world. With the support of Drake, The Weeknd continued releasing quality music with his compilation album ‘Trilogy’ and his debut studio album Kiss Land. But, it wasn’t until he released ‘Beauty Behind the Madness’ only last year that he became really known. This album marked his footsteps into the pop world, which then of many of his fans were claiming he had ‘sold out’. The album had amazing singles such as “Can’t Feel My Face”, “The Hills”, and “Earned It”, that even granted him a Grammy Award.
As an artist, it’s difficult to follow up such a big project even if you’re riding on a wave of creativity. Starboy was released in November a day after thanksgiving and immediately went to #1 on major charts. Linking up with robotic duo Daft Punk was a massive move on his part, and the results showed. In their song “I Feel it Coming” which has over 580 million views on youtube While in House of Balloons money was the motive or point of it , in “Starboy” it’s about being accustomed to the life of being able to balance artistic integrity with commercial success. The album is a perfect blend of The Weeknd’s vibe and musical style. After many listen-throughs, this album lives up to the hype and delivers a cohesive body of work that encompasses everything especially in the song “Die for you” he expresses his love towards one of his ex’s but this song is meant for almost anyone who’s in a relationship. Starboy is a body of work that anyone can appreciate. Starboy and The Weeknd's artistic vision can be divided into three sections. The first is the Abel we've come to know and love with his unique twist on R&B. Tracks like "Party Monster", "Six Feet Under", and "All I Know" channel many similar vibes to his Trilogy days and employ the same production elements such as darker soundscapes.
