where was i?
oh love, i had the most vivid dream–
i miss you, but what can i say?
with my head in the clouds, i didn’t hear you scream.
it began slowly, with the fading sunbeam,
then night poured in, and god, was it yesterday?
oh love, i had the most vivid dream–
you were there too, or so it would seem,
together we were covered in a mist of grey–
with my head in the clouds, i didn’t hear you scream.
with strength and aggression, he was too extreme–
seizing you tightly and ending your “today”…
oh love, i had the most vivid dream–
if that river was liquid candy, the mountains were whipped cream,
as i played in the stream, you became his endangered prey–
with my head in the clouds, i didn’t hear you scream.
he took you away, left you stranded upstream,
and when i awoke, it felt all too cliché.
oh love, i had the most vivid dream–
with my head in the clouds, i didn’t hear you scream.

I've been enjoying working with different styles of poetry and writing in general through my creative writing class this year, and this type of poem was particularly challenging. This is a villanelle: lines 1/6/12/18 and lines 3/9/15/19 are the same, while the rhyme scheme follows an a/b/a pattern throughout (with the exception of the last stanza being a/b/a/a).
