A Beautiful Goodbye
If someone asked who you are to me
my answer would be:
You are my smile. My inspiration.
You are my tears. My hope. My elation.
My other half. My best friend.
Every word I’ve ever penned.
I couldn’t control my feelings for you,
but I can control my goodbye.
So let it be beautiful;
no tears or regrets, my eyes are dry.
Let these words be our anchor
when waves of loneliness flood our lives,
and give us the strength to look away
when blinding memories eclipse our skies.
I love you.
More than the number of raindrops
or grains of sand.
More than I can express
or ever understand.
I love you as the sun loves to embrace the sky
after a long night apart.
I love you subconsciously, unconsciously,
with every beat of my heart.
I love you as the flower petals
love the flirty advances of a spring breeze.
Or how the birds’ melodies
love to play among the trees.
You gathered sunlight from the sky
and gave it to me through your personality.
Enchanted, I reached out to touch you,
and you rained droplets of me.
I’ll go back to the conversations
between a heart and a heart, and a dream.
And to that magical world free of complications;
a soul and a soul, basking in hope’s gleam.
You’re always with me,
closer than the blood in my veins
even closer than my shadow.
I’ve memorized you better than my name.
And so after days, months years…
I’ll still love you
more than the number of raindrops
or grains of sand.
More than I can express
or ever understand.
